It’s Easter soon, but before that, let’s have a look at what’s coming up: WordPress 7.0!
The official launch was scheduled for April 9, 2026 during the contributor day in WordCamp Asia. However, the release date was postponed. At the time of writing this, the new release date is unknown, but we should be getting an update pretty soon.
While we wait for an update, let’s have a look at the new features!
WordPress 7.0 – What’s New?
While WordPress 7.0 introduces real-time collaboration tools we’ve all been eagerly waiting for, this time it’s something else that’s making the headlines: artificial intelligence is introduced to WordPress. So, the world’s most popular CMS evolves from a static system into an AI-ready platform.
This is very promising news for those of us dealing with content on a daily basis, as it makes our workflows faster. Of course, some of us may be getting tired of AI getting absolutely everywhere… So what’s the AI in WP 7.0 really all about?
AI in WordPress
WordPress 7.0 sets the foundation for AI integrations and solutions. There’s no need to worry – the goal is not to just add a chatbot to WordPress and call it a day. Rather, the goal is to make using AI on your site easy, safe and consistent.
AI Features in WordPress 7.0
- AI Connectors and the AI Plugin: A new setting page for AI integrations (Settings > Connectors) where you can securely connect your preferred AI providers like OpenAI, Google Gemini, or Anthropic. Once set up, all your AI-powered plugins can share these credentials seamlessly.
- AI Experiments in Editor: The possibility to opt-in to core-powered features like automated excerpt generation, alt-text creation, and content summarization to speed up your publishing workflow.
- The Abilities API: Introduced in WordPress 6.9, the Abilities API allows plugins and themes to tell what they can do to AI agents, paving the way for a future where AI can help you build and manage your site.

Connecting AI to your site with API keys is straightforward and quick. Once you’ve installed the AI plugin and added an AI agent to your site, you can try enabling new features like excerpt generation on the Settings > AI page.

Beyond the AI
While the AI capabilities has perhaps received the most attention as of late, WordPress 7.0 is a massive leap forward when it comes to working as a team.
Up until now, users have had to “take over” editing a page or a post, for example. This is going to change, as now we’re able to collaborate on content together as a team seamlessly.
- Real-Time Collaboration: See live cursors and edit alongside your team in real time. If you’ve ever used Google Docs with your coworkers, the idea is the same. Read more on make.wordpress.org.
- Modernized Admin: The dashboard is getting its first major visual and functional refresh in over a decade, powered by the new DataViews framework, which was initially introduced in WordPress 6.5 and 6.6.
Enable Collaboration in WP 7.0
Before you can start collaborating in real-time, you need to have WordPress 7.0 installed and collaboration feature enabled in Settings > Writing.

Once you’ve enabled collaboration, multiple users can work on pages, posts or other content simultaneously, and you can see where their cursors are placed. The UI shows a small thumbnail of the user’s profile picture.
