Last year Seravo organised a Green Friday campaign for the very first time. Green Friday is a reaction to Black Friday campaigns, particularly prominent in online stores, and draws attention to socially responsible and environmentally beneficial activities instead.
Our donation target was the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation, working to stop the loss of nature, which we at Seravo wish to support. We are happy to announce that from this year on we are also an official supporter company for the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation!
Peatland as a Carbon Sink
The key to preventing climate change is to sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide in vegetation. By paying attention to protecting different environments, we are also protecting biodiversity and different species in various habitats.
Forests are one of the most important carbon sinks. As they grow, they absorb carbon dioxide produced by emissions. In Finland, forests are the most important carbon sinks, but peatlands also play an important role in carbon storage.
In 2020, Seravo acquired a peatland area in Ranua, Finland. The peatland is in its natural state, and our future goal is to protect the area. The acquisition compensates for emissions from our operations. Seravo is also part of the Finnish Chamber of Commerce’s Climate Commitment, and although our emissions have increased since the pandemic, we are actively exploring ways to reduce emissions in the future.
Responsibility for the environment should be approached with various actions. Green values are important for the employees at Seravo, both at work and in leisure time.
Data and Emissions
According to the latest data, greenhouse gas emissions from network traffic are overtaking those from aviation. For example artificial intelligence requires resources in the form of new data centres and energy: datacenters need water for cooling the server halls.
While the need for resources is growing, the use of AI is also expected to provide potential relief to the problems in energy consumption – if the solutions it offers can be used to optimize code, for example.
Websites and Energy Consumption
As the constant consumption of data increases the emissions from server operations, it is important to maintain websites in an optimised way, without wasting resources.
Software development has changed over the years: executing code quickly and efficiently was enough. Today, code should not only be efficient, it should also be optimized and use resources sparingly.
Server load and the energy the servers consume can be reduced by optimizing the code on your site. This is why Seravo wants to encourage web developers and site owners to study sites’ performance and optimize them.
Seravo Helps to Optimize Your WordPress Site
Seravo measures hosting plan usage by monitoring the number of HTTP requests on your site. The HTTP requests are a good way to assess whether the site’s code is well optimized in terms of performance. If you optimize your code, you’ll ensure your site performs well, gains visibility in search engines and is a pleasure for visitors to browse! What’s more, your site will do well with a smaller hosting plan at Seravo. Get started with WP Start!
Plan limits at Seravo are contractual, which means we will not block access to your site even if the amount of HTTP requests grow suddenly. Choose a plan and just log in – we’ll of course help you in choosing the perfect one!
Seravo’s WordPress experts also offer advice for optimising your site, and our blog contains a wide range of tips for maintaining WordPress. If your site is hosted at Seravo, you can also order site optimization as an additional service.
