Green Transition and IT – Is There Still Hope?

Today is the Earth Day, an annual international event focused on supporting environmental protection, first held in the 1970s. Earth Day is a good time to pause and reflect on the green aspect of our hosting service, and the impact our actions have on the environment.

What Is the Green Transition?

One of the central goals of the green transition is to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources and, more generally, to promote sustainable development in society. As climate and environmental awareness increases, open discussion about it is more topical than ever.

Who wouldn’t want their service to be environmentally friendly? Unfortunately, a side effect is greenwashing – misleading marketing claims, by which companies or organizations present their products or operations as more environmentally friendly than they actually are. The goal is often to create a positive image and attract environmentally conscious consumers, even if the actual environmental impacts are minimal or even negative.

Green Claims Directive in 2026

To combat greenwashing, stricter criteria are coming into effect in 2026 to prevent the use of misleading terms when marketing the environmental friendliness of services. Green Claims directive is a proposal for EU legislation, aimed at providing consumers with reliable, environmentally friendly, and comparable products. Green Claims also aims to secure consumers’ position in the green transition as the progress accelerates.

Green and Sustainable ICT

Sustainable IT solutions are part of a climate-conscious ICT culture. The term green ICT refers to all actions and measures taken in support of green values that promote the sustainable development of ICT. Many green transition projects strive for carbon neutrality and a circular economy. Rapid technological development also plays a role in these projects, and the green transition already plays a significant role in all social activities in one way or another.

The term green refers to environmental awareness in all activities, but it also includes economic, social, technological, and human considerations for sustainability. Sustainable development is a way of examining the use of natural resources from the perspective of continuity.

Taking good care of the environment consists of both big and small actions.

But Houston, We Have a Problem!

Transitioning to energy-efficient solutions and a thorough examination of one’s own operations promotes change towards a cleaner tomorrow. However, the green transition is not entirely without its problems.

Everyone is talking about artificial intelligence now. However, it has its own issues: it reduces the need for human labor but still consumes natural resources. AI also has an enormous pitfall, which is also one of the biggest challenges of the future: the use of clean water, which acts as a cooling solution in server rooms, and which is only available in limited quantities on Earth.

Time to Examine Our Own Actions

Seravo aims to implement environmentally friendly solutions as part of its own operations. However, finding an environmentally friendly solution is not always possible, in which case compensation must be made in other ways. This can be done when more sustainable solutions are not yet feasible.

Seravo has made a Climate Commitment, organized by The Chamber of Commerce in Finland. The climate commitment urges us to track our own carbon footprint. We are also support the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation’s work to prevent biodiversity loss.

With the upcoming new directive, Seravo’s carbon negativity statement will also undergo strict scrutiny, although the Seravo peatland continues to function as a carbon sink and an emissions compensation area.

Opportunities of the Green Transition

Energy-efficient transitions in the IT sector is affected by many factors: concrete examples include server solutions, code efficiency, and its optimization. With the new directive, the possibility of greenwashing decreases, which makes it easier to compare services and navigate between different providers. Responsible choices can be made more easily, and natural resources can be used more sustainably when service providers that genuinely consider the environment stand out from the crowd.

Sustainable procurements and processes are also valuable work from a nature conservation perspective when investments are necessary. However, the green transition is a continuous process whose goals require time and effort.

Seravo and Environmental Responsibility

Seravo’s WordPress hosting service uses servers that utilize renewable energy sources. We also encourage our employees to make sustainable choices in their daily lives and strive to maintain this as part of the work culture at Seravo. Many people seek employment at Seravo precisely because we also consider environmental values.

Navigating the tightening environmental requirements is undeniably a challenge, but we boldly embrace it. Seravo is genuine, and we want to be so in this as well – and not deceive our customers with false environmental claims.

Seravo is fast, secure, green and real.
