Go Carbon Negative with Seravo

As a responsible company Seravo avoids the use of fossil fuels, ensuring that carbon dioxide emissions are minimized in order to slow down climate change. At the end of 2019, Seravo became carbon neutral, and in summer 2020 carbon negative, thanks to Seravo’s own 260 hectares of natural wetlands!

Seravo’s hosting resides in data centers that use 100% green, renewable energy: hydropower and wind power. Web traffic accounts for an ever-increasing share of the world’s electricity consumption. By migrating your website to Seravo you can be sure that your own website will not produce more carbon emissions from electricity consumption!

Optimized WordPress

To guarantee that any website works well, its implementation must be considered. In the past, code had to be fast and efficient – today, code should be efficient, but also be economical in how it uses available resources. With Seravo’s scalable architecture and powerful servers, your site will always run as fast as possible.

Using resources wisely means less energy consumption. That’s why Seravo wants to encourage site owners and developers to make sure that sites are well optimized. This is also why we measure the usage of plans by HTTP request quotas; the amount of requests is a good indicator of whether a site and its code is well optimised. A site with fewer HTTP requests will do well with a smaller plan!

The WordPress experts in our customer service are happy to share their advice on how to optimize your WordPress site. On Seravo’s blog, you’ll also find useful articles on WordPress optimization and how to get started. We also perform site speed and performance optimizations as an additional service for sites in our premium hosting.

Green Deeds, Every Day

Seravo also pays attention to responsible and sustainable actions in its everyday activities. Although electronics and sustainability are often a difficult combination, we strive to make sustainable choices, for example by ensuring that purchased equipment can be repaired and maintained when necessary.

Recycling and extending the life of objects is important, for example by repairing clothes or electronics. If we are not working remotely, we use public transport to get to work. We want to encourage and support others in making sustainable choices!

We share information and encourage going green in our workplace, and we also make green initiatives in our employee recreational activities. We actively discuss issues such as vegetarianism, recycling and circular economy. Many people in Seravo spend their leisure time doing things like cooking zero waste, eradicating invasive species, picking up litter in the wild, and recording species sightings in the Finnish Biodiversity Info Facility.

Peatland as a Carbon Sink

Seravo has acquired a natural bog area located in Ranua, Finland in 2020, and we hope that in the future we will also be able to protect it officially. Two thirds of Finland’s carbon stocks are located in peat bogs.

The bog and its protection act as a carbon sink, whilst also providing habitat for endangered and threatened species. Preserving the area in its natural state therefore prevents habitat loss. For example, the extremely endangered ruff (Calidris pugnax) has been observed in the area, and it is hoped that the conservation of biodiversity and the protection of semi-natural areas will contribute to the expansion of the species’ habitat.

The areas owned by Seravo sequester around 775 000 kg of carbon equivalent CO2 emissions from the atmosphere each year, up to 55 times more greenhouse gas than our activities produce.
